It All Started With a Handshake

Ahhh! This is so exciting to write about and I’m super excited to share it with you all. A lot of you know the story on how Kane and I met. As for those who are new here and have no idea, welcome and thank you! I’m beyond excited to share this story with you all.

My first week in Des Moines a classmate of mine (shout out to Bre) invited me to her place for a LipSense party. I agreed but at first I was hesitate to even go because I didn’t know my way around. Long story short, I went over to her place. I ended up meeting Megan. When I got to Bre’s place, Megan was on the floor with her son who was just 8 months old. Such a cutie, had a huge smile on his face and was so friendly. Let’s just say he had no idea what ‘stranger danger’ was. A while later, Megan’s husband, Kyle, came over to pick up their son to take him home. As I was introduced to Kyle, Megan mentioned how he also went to the University of Northern Iowa, his major was communications (mine was public relations…they went hand in hand and overlapped with classes and teachers) and lastly, he had a twin. But his twin was in a relationship. I got to know Megan more throughout the evening and next thing you know we are friends on Facebook.

One night in November I had the sudden urge to watch Elf and drink hot chocolate, but I had no one to do that with. Me, being the social media addict that I was, posted a status on Facebook about wanting to watch Elf and drink hot chocolate with someone. Megan saw the status and decided to comment on it by saying that Kyle had a twin (wait, wasn’t he in a relationship though?) Once again, me being the social media addict, I did a little creeping on Kyle’s twin brother, Kane.

Megan and I got into a conversation about asking me if I’d want to meet Kane and I responded back with only if he wanted to meet me. The feelings were mutual and a double date was set up for that weekend. Truth be told, I was nervous. I never met or talked to Kane before. It was literally a blind date.

Friday, November 17, 2017 came along and I was sitting in the parking lot of La Fiesta. I was touching up my make up, fixing my hair and had many butterflies in my stomach. I waited to get out of my car until Kyle, Megan and their son showed up so I could walk in with them. As we walked in and we got to our table, Kane is there and OHHH BOY! I’m sure I had the biggest smile on my face. We spotted each other, I reached my hand out to shake his. YES, I SHOOK HIS HAND!! (I was nervous and didn’t know what else to do!) But he shook it with a smile on his face and we made our way to our table.

Conversation was rolling out like no trouble at all. No awkward moments or silences. During that time I find out that he also went to UNI, his major was communications and I’m sure we ran into each other a couple of times but never even knew it. After dinner we headed to go bowling and during that time, found out that Kane and I had the exact same car—2014 Ford Focus. But, his was silver and mine was black.

Bowling was so much fun. Tons of laughing, random dancing and great conversation. But sadly, the evening came to an end. We said our goodbye’s to Kyle and Megan while Kane and I stood outside saying bye to each other. He reached into his pocket and handed me his phone so I could put my number in it. He then asked me on a second date for the next night. Dinner and a movie. I was completely excited and happy how well the night went that we were going on a second date. After a hug and saying bye, I headed to my car, checked my phone to see a text message from a number that I didn’t have “Hey Erica, it’s Kane Michelsen”—-well who else would it be!? I was so giddy!

Our second date turned into constantly texting each other, to hanging out more and more throughout the week, to becoming friends and getting to know each other, to becoming officially boyfriend and girlfriend on April 12th, 2018 during a MercyMe concert.

Kane has taught me many things during our time together before we were official. He went through a couple of things which taught me to be patient and there is no need to rush a good thing (heck, it took him 5 months to kiss me), that God is good and he got me back into my faith, which I’m SOOOOO GRATEFUL for. Ugh, truly amazing!

I guess you could say that a handshake is all that it took to sweep the man of my dreams off his feet!
